Book Review: My First Book of Saints

Both of my older daughters really like reading about the saints.  Over the past few years I've found that it's a bit easier to find books on the saints for older children than it is to find ones that are geared to those in the kindergarten through 2nd grade set.  Since I teach kindergarten religious ed, I often find myself getting a little frustrated that many of the picture books on the saints just aren't on a younger child's level.  Too often I have found myself reading a short account of a saint's life only to look up from the book to see my class looking at me as if I had two heads.

I was delighted when I was made aware of My First Book of Saintsfrom Pauline Kids.  This book is geared to children between the ages of 5-8 and presents the stories of 62 saints in a way that is just right for younger children.  Children who are beginning to read independently will find this book easy to navigate.  Because the stories are relatively short, they are also ideal for reading aloud to the preschool set.

There is a colorful illustration for each of the saints featured in this book.  In addition to the saints story, you'll also find a prayer to the saint that will inspire children to imitate his or her virtues.  I particularly liked the little information box for each of the saints that gave a bit more background information such as the time period and region from which the saint hails as well as when his or her feast day is celebrated.

My First Book of Saintsalso includes a lovely dedication page making it ideal for gift giving.  This book would be an appropriate gift idea for a first Holy Communion or first reconciliation.

I was provided with a review copy of this book by the publisher, Pauline Kids, in exchange for my honest review.  Visit Pauline Media to take a peek in side or to purchase a copy of  My First Book of Saints.
